H-Regulating the Brain

Abstract: One of the major concerns women have about their hormonal control is the effect of fluctuating hormones on their mood, and also psychological performance and stability. Chasteberry and Isoflavones are a unique combination found in H-Regulator, both of which have beneficial health effects on cognition and psychological wellbeing.

Oestrogen has a considerable influence on the central nervous system, on mediating the production of essential hormones, but also on mood and cognition. Several studies indicate that isoflavones are beneficial for cognition and memory. First investigated in animals, chronic isoflavone supplementation has been shown to improve certain memory and frontal lobe functions [1, 2]. These effects were initially only applicable to postmenopausal women however, another study investigating the effects of soy isoflavones on younger people found that supplementation with isoflavones for 10 weeks significantly improves short and long term memory, and mental flexibility in women [3]. Furthermore, the effects of isoflavones supplementation also ameliorate the oestrogen deficit related cognitive decline during menses. In a study measuring the psychological effects of isoflavones throughout the menstrual cycle found that there was a significant improvement in cognition and memory [4].

Psychological and Emotional Wellbeing

In recent years, the health profile of isoflavones has been significantly bolstered by findings that they may help ameliorate the severity and occurrence of menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, increased perspiration and night sweats [5-8]. Through this effect, isoflavones not only improve the vasomotor symptoms of menopause but it also supports psychological and emotional wellbeing. In recent animals models, isoflavones have been shown to positively influence mood reducing levels of anxiety and depression [9, 10]. These results are predicted to be applicable to humans as an adjunct to the improvements in the physical symptoms of menopause.

Chasteberry has also been lauded as an effective medicament for women’s health, with clinical trials having demonstrated that treatment with chasteberry can provide relief to women suffering from the symptoms of menopause-related distress. In several double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled studies [11-13], chasteberry has mediated significant improvements in irritability, mood alteration, anger and headache in women relative to placebo controls.

A Potent Combination: Isoflavones and Chasteberry

Independently, isoflavones and chasteberry has profound benefits on psychological health for women. These effects have been noted across various age groups and all phases of the menstrual cycle, indicating that H-Regulator is beneficial for all women in the maintenance of sexual and reproductive health. Therefore taken together, the synergistic and complementary effects of isoflavones and chasteberry provide sufficient support for women’s health.
